A New Cogwheel in the Öresund Competence Chain

Science Skills wants to contribute to integration of international competence in the Öresundsregion and paves the way for education and business structures to go hand in hand.

When AstraZeneca, in March 2010, announced that they’re going to close their research facility in Lund, the Öresundsregion was keen in finding ways to retain the competence of the 900 persons employed at the site.

Money from the European Globalisation Adjustment Fund was granted to set up and run the project Medicon Skills. The aim of the project was to offer services to the highly qualified people working at AstraZeneca to help them find new jobs, training or education in the region.

The project terminated in December last year and turned out a success. The people working with it saw a permanent need for the project’s novel ways of matching vacancies with persons with the right competence level. Hence, the project was re-born as the cooperation Science Skills in April 2014, with Allan Larsson, Medicon Village AB and Handelskammaren as its founders.

The Right Skill at the Right Time
Science professionals are often too qualified for the training and services offered by Arbetsförmedlingen and many of their potential employers don’t have the time and resources to go through a hundred CVs to find just that one person with the right competence level for the vacant position, nor to hire a recruitment firm to do the job for them.

”By using Science Skills HR Support, small companies get the advantages from a large company and only pay for what they need at the time,” says Annika Svensson Dalgren, Managing Director, Science Skills.

She stresses that Science Skills doesn’t replace any of the other actors on the labour market, but complement them with a more direct approach that narrows down the number of suitable candidates right from the beginning.

”And we work in both directions; with students and post-docs about to get their first job, as well as recently dismissed persons trying to find a new one on the one hand; and expanding companies with limited resources on the other hand,” says Annika Antius, Business Development Manager, Science Skills.

International Integration
One aspect of attracting and keeping highly qualified, international, persons in a region is that of finding suitable occupations for the companions that these persons bring with them.

”We support organisations attempting to attract, retain and integrate international competences and skills in the Öresundsregion. We also support those who recruit internationally by providing support for spouses and family members through our business and social networks,” says Annika Svensson Dalgren.

Among other cases, the Öresundsregion is currently facing the huge challenge of finding suitable work for the companions to the approx. 450 people that will be employed at the European Spallation Source (ESS) and MAX IV Laboratory. In addition, these gigantic microscopes, the biggest in the world, will attract some 2,000 to 3,000 scientists per year, coming from all over the world.

Annual Career Fair
To facilitate matchmaking the Science Skills Career Fair is arranged every autumn. The career fair, which attracted 750 visitors last year, provides great networking opportunities for small and large companies, students and experienced employees. Science Skills also arranges the mini career presentation sessions ‘After Work to Get New Work’ throughout the year.

“This year the Career Fair takes place 5th of November at Medicon Village in Lund. New this year is speed dating with post docs!,” says Annika Antius.

Science Skills welcomes knowledge-intense business structures to become members in their cooperation.
