Bionamic, based in Lund, Sweden, supports the analysis of life science data by developing custom workflows and analytical tools. Its aim is to enable R&D companies to maximise the value of their data in the fastest and easiest way possible.
Life sciences and healthcare R&D is resulting in huge volumes of data. While this data is crucial to the development of efficacious and cost-effective therapeutics and diagnostics, many researchers are struggling to make the most of the information. Bionamic, founded by Anders Carlsson, aims to bridge the gap between raw data and results with powerful but easy-to-use tools.
The data challenges
Because of the huge technical advances in life sciences, it has become easy to generate millions of data points, especially with the easy availability of next-generation sequencing data and high-throughput imaging.
“There are lots of traps in these analyses, especially for people with little experience in more complex analysis,” said Carlsson. “Each company has its own questions, too. This adds another layer of complexity. Researchers know what they want to do but don’t have tools for their specific combination of assays and questions.”
Bionamic’s data workflows and analytical tools allow users to interact with the data in an intuitive manner, and use automation to reduce the need for manual data input and manipulation, making the process faster, easier and more accurate.
The company, based at the SmiLe incubator in Medicon Village, Lund, Sweden, was founded in January 2016 and has arisen from Carlsson’s post-doc observations of how life scientists worked with data.
“I have been a cancer researcher for more than ten years, and I’ve seen how dramatically even very simple tools can change the way other researchers work with and think about their results” said Carlsson. “Bionamic’s key to success is that we come from a research background, not IT. This is a tremendous advantage in communicating the complexities of projects like these.”
In addition to creating completely tailored solutions for its customers, Bionamic is now developing software as a turnkey solution for companies working in antibody development.
Bionamic’s customers, which include diagnostics, pharma, biotech, and hardware companies, get easy-to-use tools that require only minimal training for users, typically in around six week to three months from order.
“These are for a onetime payment or as software as a service [SaaS], and are accessible through web browsers on local servers or as a cloud service,” said Carlsson.
