Stena RoRo delivers not only vessels but offers a whole realm of services ranging from consulting services to shipbuilding with a green focus. A key characteristic of Stena RoRo is the ability to quickly adjust and adapt both ships and operations to market demand.

Meeting market demands

One of the strongest demands for the future is more environmentally friendly ships through carbon capture.

“Within the Stena-family we were pioneers in the development of shore power and one of the first to try methanol operation of an entire ship. Stena Germanica was completely rebuilt to run solely on methanol as early as 2015. Now it is of more interest than ever, as oil prices are soaring and at the same time we need to shrink our environmental footprint”, says CEO Per Westling, Stena RoRo.

Collaboration with Promon

Methanol can in fact already be produced completely carbon-free through carbon capture. When the supply is secured and the price makes it economically possible to implement, Stena RoRo will switch to increased green methanol operation.

“We want to proceed much faster than our competitors. Therefore, we have started collaboration with Proman, the world’s second largest supplier of methanol. However, the answer to the challenge that comes with the green transition is not just methanol. We believe in a combination of several solutions where LNG and battery operation also play major roles”, Westling continues.

Prepared for the future

As there are a limited number of RoRo- and RoPax-vessels available on a global basis, customization is essential.

“We are prepared for the future. We design and build for a future progress with several different solutions. Thus, our new vessels are prepared to switch to LNG, methanol, battery operation and other alternative fuels. Even shore power may in future be used for powering the ships, although we are still in early days here”, Per Westling concludes.
